By Road
Wickham Bishops is a small village between Witham
(on the A12) and Maldon at the coast. If approaching
Witham on the A12 from the M25 (exit 28) direction (i.e. SW), turn off at the
sign for Witham, after about 3/4 mile turn right at the Jack and Jenny pub;
after 1/4 mile carry straight on at a new roundabout (the left exit) and after a
further 1/4 mile turn right at the T junction, go
under the A12 bridge and then proceed as at A below.
If approaching Witham from the A120 / Braintree
direction (i.e. NW) on the B1018, follow the main road into Witham (roundabout,
over railway bridge, small roundabout) until you arrive at a T junction with
traffic lights. Turn right and after about 100 yards
turn left at the traffic lights; after about a mile (straight over a mini roundabout)
you will go under the A12 bridge and then proceed as
at A below.
If approaching Wickham Bishops from the Maldon
/ Heybridge direction, School Road is the first on
the left and no. 18 is the first house on the left, with ample parking space.
A. About 1/4 mile beyond the A12
bridge turn left. After 1/4 mile, passing a golf course on your right, you come
to a small narrow bridge (over the river Blackwater),
where you have right of way over oncoming traffic; proceed up the hill with
woods on both sides for about ½ mile and you arrive at Wickham Bishops. At the
top of the hill where the road levels out go straight over the crossroads. Carry
on through the village for about 1/4 mile past The Chequers
Pub on your left until you come to a junction with one road coming in on the
left with The Mitre pub on your left and two roads
coming in from the right at the same point. School Road is the second of these
on the right and is at right angles to the main road. No.18
